What is asbestos ?

Asbestos is a term which describes certain minerals used in industry. Asbestos became popular among industrial manufacturers at the end of the 19th century due its resistance to heat, fire, tension, chemical and electrical influences, as well as its absorbent capacity. It was therefore used widely in sheeting, glues, sealants and slabs due to its insulating properties, but also in certain cement products for its sealing and binding properties.

The industrial use of asbestos really took off in the 1860s thanks to the discovery of large deposits. At the end of the 70s, the use of asbestos began to decrease in Europe and was regulated, since governments had become aware of the dangerous and toxic nature of this product.

At the end of the 90s, asbestos was officially banned from use (except in certain sectors), the toxicity of the material having been proven. It causes cancer among other things, mainly among those who have come to be known as «asbestos workers».
